Attitude and Gratitude

I have really been struggling lately with how to teach our children gratitude.  I can correct their grammar, how they treat others, and a host of things that Moms and Dads repeat every day to raise their kids.  Gratitude is so much harder.

I was struck recently by how much complaining I hear in my house.    And then I thought how much do I complain?  How often DO I complain?  How often am I not grateful?  Yesterday as I was carrying on the daily duties of life I said to myself OH, I HAVE to do this?  (which was putting a new bath tissue in the holder).   How silly? how ungrateful?  I GET to put bath tissue on the holder.  I have two hands and the dexterity to do the job.  I have plenty of bath tissue in the house.  Do the job with joy in your heart, instead of anguish (or anger) because you can’t get right back to your ipad surfing, or facebook.  Pleazzzzzzz.

For the rest of the day I substituted GET in place of HAVE when I realized something needed to be done.  I GET to decide what we are having for dinner.  As I stare at a full pantry and overstocked freezer.  I GET to cook for my family.  I have the capacity to cook (not the skill people, ha!).  For my family.   For my family.  Which in my youth I never dreamed of having.

My personal gratitude has improved my attitude.  by.leaps.and.bounds.  And I already had a good attitude.  How was I going to pass on this wonderful knowledge to my kids?

I woke at 4:00 this morning.   After tossing and turning all night.  Attitude.  Gratitude.  The keys to happiness.  I had the perfect idea.  It involves showing not telling.  You can tell all you want, but showing makes them remember.  Now all I have to do is wait for the perfect opportunity.  Of course I’ll let you know when it happens. And YES their will be pictures.

Attitude and Gratitude.  I plan on rockin’ that theme this Christmas Season.

A post is always better with a picture.  Here is one from a reason session.  Love this image, looks almost like a painting.

Sparkle Sessions – But what am I gonna wear?!

The most asked question I receive is “What am I gonna wear?”.    Everyone also wishes they had time to lose that last 10 lbs (a little more than 10 for me).  But don’t worry about those pounds.   If real estate is all about location, photography is all about the pose.

For clothes I always suggest bring a few things you might like.  Something light, something dark, and try to stick with solid colors in muted tones, camisoles in cream, white or black.  Something that will match your eye color.   Silk gown, or teddy.  This isn’t boudoir, the focus will be about your face.   Think feminine.  Try to be monocromatic for the bottoms, for example if you bring a cream camisole wear a cream skirt or jeans. Bring several pieces to choose from.  I will also have some clothing choices that you can wear as is or layer.  I actually have a very expanding “Sparkle Closet”.  I plan to put together a pdf soon to help clients pre-plan their outfits.

Here is the gorgeous Cindy.  Dark hair and eyes.  Looked beautiful in everything.  I simply couldn’t pick a favorite.

I have a few sessions left for family shoots on Saturday November 17th.  Only four dates left for Sparkle Sessions.  If you need a Christmas Gift for Mom – this could be it!

2012 Christmas Limited Editions – Book EARLY!

Sorry that I have been MIA.   I had a major overhaul of blog, website, and business direction.  Add to that lotsa shoots, logo design work, promo material work – and I’ve been one busy girl.  And that’s just photog work!  Son is playing football, and our daughter is about to get her music thang on.  Oh and Christmas is like JUST around the corner.

I love Christmas cards.  LOVE THEM.  As a kid we would tape them on a door jam.   Although they are fun to make – they are extremely time consuming.  I’ve decided this year to forgo designing my own cards.  There is no way I could come up with enough variation in designs to satisfy my clientbase.   Creating custom cards for every client just isn’t feasible.

Remember every Collection I offer includes digital images with print release.   It is super simple to order your own Christmas cards.

Some of the options include: Tiny Prints.com which currently has a 20% off special going (they also have a 20% off for Costco members if the current one expires).  Tiny Prints has 859 Christmas card designs starting at $0.89 cents per card.  This is a real press print card – not photo card.  Shutterfly.com has 335 Christmas card designs starting at $0.32 cents a card.  Snapfish.com cards start at $0.40 cents per card.

If you want to reduce your stress level and get those cards done early, give me a call or shoot me an email.  We can get your annual family pictures taken that will give you plenty of options to choose from for Christmas cards, or quite possibly a new updated image for your foyer or family room!

Here are a few behind the scenes of the Christmas Limited Edition set planned for the following dates:  Saturday November 3, November 10 sold out, Saturday November 17.  I still have some dates available before my last shoot day of the year, Saturday December 1st (regular session fees apply, limited availability) but only 2 more Limited Editions for the year.  Due to overwhelming Sparkle shoots the “Great Gatsby” Limited Edition has been moved until the Spring!

I’m still able to get a smile – even for test shots.  Not so much combing her hair though.

Austin Sparkle Session : Tennis Player

I had the best time photographing two friends at a recent Sparkle session.  They are very good friends.  They are also a very good competitive tennis team.  Fierce.  They got game, and they also have strategy.  Nothing weak about these ladies!  One of the dynamic duo hasn’t seen her images yet, so I can only showcase the one for now.

When this girl smiles – it’s an all out smile.  No holding back.  Love that.

 Happy Tuesday!

What’s new? – Sparkle Session

I’m starting a new photography line.  It is similar to wedding photography because you will have your hair and makeup professionally done.   It is similar to glamour photography because you can get all gussied up.  It is similar to boudoir photography because it will reveal the décolletage.  It is actually a bridge between all three.

                 Introducing Sparkle

Sparkle  is when you plan a few days around yourself.  Get a mani, a pedi.  Get those highlights touched up.  Then come into the studio for your professional makeup.  Enjoy some champagne and strawberries.  Of course bring your Mom, your daughter or best friend, or all three if you like!  This is the ultimate in girl’s day out.  Or surprise your honey.  (I can’t be held responsible for how hot you will look!)

These sessions are so much fun!  I have a new love!

Costumes – for the Great Gatsby!

I’m really starting to get excited about the Limited Edition scheduled for this fall! This will truly be a one-of-a-kind photoshoot. We will have a 1920’s cream colored Packard set against a backdrop of beautiful live oaks and green lawn. This shoot will be fantastic for couples and family portraits.

Of course you are welcome to wear your own clothing, but we will also have a few dresses for the ladies! And don’t forget your hats!

Here are two dresses I purchased a few months ago on a shopping trip to Houston.

The dresses are identically made, flapper style, one cream color one light grey.

I LOVE the fringe and the spaghetti straps.  Here is a close-up shot of the bead work.

And here is the bottom fringe work.

Here is the cream colored dress with one of the period hats I purchased along with a scarf.

Isn’t this just Gorgeous!

Hurry and schedule your session soon!  Limited Edition standard session fee is $35 for 10 minutes.  If you would also like professional makeup that will be an additional $75.  And why not?  When do you want to look stunning?…before a photograph.  Come early for makeup and a sip of champagne.  Have the hubby bring the kiddo’s later.  (but make sure you book a sitter! – cause you will look hot~!

Goals Re-visited

As a photographer I guess it goes without saying that I am a very visual person.  But I will say it anyway! It’s much easier for me to comprehend or remember something if I’ve seen it.  I write alot.  To encourage myself to write I have tons of markers, pens, oil pastels, and now a fancy app called Paper.  LOVE that app!

I also love ink stamps.  Whenever I produce a storybook for a client I have a really cool chandilier stamp I put on the back inside flap.  Then I sign it. I guess signing or writing something down makes it more real.

I recently revisited my goals.  I have many!  I did have them written on scratch pad taped to my idea wall.  But I recently had some leftover black foam board so I took the time to make those goals prettier.  And quite frankly anything looks better to me with a chandilier.

Happy Monday!

Strike a Pose

I find inspiration everywhere.  There are several magazines I peruse to check out styling and lighting.  And poses. Yep always looking for new and interesting poses.  Unless your a photographer you probably don’t think about it. But come on – think about it.  You can’t tell a client to well – just stand there.  Well sometimes I do that.  hee hee. just kidding.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about.  I ripped this pose from a magazine.  Yes it was my magazine. I’ve had it in my stash for months.  And didn’t think about it until I had this client walk into my studio.

Image

Of course this client would look gorgeous anyways.  Even if I did tell her to just stand there.

Have a great week.  I’m planning on it!

In studio

I’ve been doing a lot of studio work lately. Could be that the temperatures in Austin in June (plus the mosquito squadron) are keeping me indoors! But I am really having a creative wave. Several of the shoots have been a surprise for Father’s day so I can’t post pictures. But one lately isn’t a surprise, and was a joy to photograph!

I’m prepping for another shoot today. Three generations. I can’t wait!
Moby is trying to help, but can’t seem to stay awake.

  Happy Summer!

Fun Friday May 25th 2012

So I was out of town last week. For the whole week people. Flew out Monday morning – the weekend AFTER graduation weekend. We live in Austin Texas, so not only did I have high school grads, but for those of you who just crawled out from under a rock, Austin is the proud home of UT. That would be “Hook ’em” Horns.

So upon returning home of course every bath tissue roll was empty. Every hand soap dispenser was empty. Seriously? How do people without a MOM wipe or wash?

Anywho I cleaned up the kitchen – spotless. Went on a few errands and came home to find this:

Really?  To which I had to send my hubby a text:

Poor Moby. He gets blamed for ALOT around our house.  But he is quickly forgiven. How could you not?

Hope you and yours have a FAB Memorial Day Weekend!
